Traffic was still open to cars, so I had to ride carefully on the shoulders. This would allow me to prepare for what was about to come. So, Saturday before the race I went on a recon ride of the entire bike course. The wind – I have done a number of windy weekend rides trying to “simulate” race conditions. For me, it took three days for it to happen. As you acclimate your body reacts by increasing your sweat rate and you no longer feel tired. The heat – Well, I grew up in Rio, so how bad can this heat be? Not so fast! The heat is overwhelming and in the first few days simple things like walking or climbing a flight of stairs would get me tired and soaked in sweat. The goal was to acclimate to the heat, shake off the jet lag and recon the bike course in enough time to be fresh on race day. Anything else better would be icing on the cake. Feel strong enough during and after the race to enjoy the moment and our 23 years anniversary celebration (I wanted to go out for salsa dancing after the race – just kidding). I’ll try to stick as much as possible to the facts despite the highly emotional component of having completed this race.įinish and be safe no matter what. So, this is my way to express my thanks for all who cared and share this victory with all. I usually don’t do race reports, however, there were just too many people rooting and following my journey to get here.
